Founder

I’m Meg, the founder of BAT Clay Studio, and I have been making ceramics since I was a kid in the 1990s.

As I expanded my craft, it occurred to me that we ceramicists need better ways to bring our goods to market, to allow for more time making and less admin. And when I moved to Southern Brooklyn in 2018, I saw that there were no communal ceramics studios in the area. So I decided to establish a membership studio right in my neighborhood and include a showroom for easy selling on site.

My personal work, which has been featured in The New York Times, can be found at mm-ceramics.com.

  • Prior to founding BAT Clay Studio, I worked as a documentary film editor. Among my favorite documentary projects, was a short profile that I directed about ceramicist Monty J, viewable here. The film, which won the Jacob Burns Creative Culture Award at the Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival, captures Monty’s unique artistic approach and depicts his remarkable commitment to the craft of ceramics.

FAQs

  • We don’t. Our studio is made up of experienced ceramicists who work autonomously. If you’re looking to learn, we recommend you check out Clay Space, Gasworks, Ovington Pottery, or one of the many other studios in Brooklyn that offers classes and workshops. Then after a couple of years, come to us!

  • BAT Clay operates a retail showroom that sells work made on site. We are open to the public 12-2 on weekdays (except during July and August). Members are encouraged—but by no means required—to sell their work in our on-site showroom. The showroom operates on a consignment model with a maker-friendly 60/40 split (60% going to the maker).
